“Give Food, Contain Them”: Home Ministry On Migrant Workers Amid Lockdown

The Home Ministry has directed all states and union territories to provide “temporary accommodation, food, clothing, medical care” to the tens of thousands of migrant workers stranded around the country. Many of them are daily wagers without jobs and money after the 21-day “total lockdown” ordered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to halt the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Under the lockdown all public transport, including railways and interstate buses, were shut, forcing them to undertake the arduous journey on foot, despite no food, water or shelter from the heat. However, with the number of active cases in the country crossing 900, concerns have also been raised over the infection spreading even further because of the mass exodus.
